Introduction
We’ve looked at cultural, religious and gender groups, all of which are present in your community. But are there any other groups?
Types of Community Group
There are numerous other clubs or groups in your community that you might belong to. Some examples are:
• Sports clubs
• Dance companies
• Youth groups
• Scouts, Brownies or Girl Guides
• Schools
• Special interest clubs e.g. craft groups or
games clubs.

Beliefs, Values & Practices
Membership in any of these groups usually means that you do certain things or behave in a certain way. For example, you might eat healthy and exercise because you belong to a football team, or you might read every night because you’re a part of a book club.
You might belong to a group because of the things you care about. For example, if you care about the environment, you may join a conservation group.

Activities
Brainstorm
Think of all the different types of group in your community. Can you think of any that don’t fit into the cultural, religious or gender categories?
My Community Groups
Think about all of the groups we’ve discussed so far. Make a list of all the groups that are in your community.
Underline all of the groups that you belong to.
For each underlined group, write down why you are a part of it, and what do you do because you are in this group.
EXAMPLE:
I play football for the Tigers because I like playing football and that’s the team my dad played for.
Because I play for the Tigers I go to training every Wednesday and play a match every Saturday. I like to eat healthy and do stretches so I can play better.
